Bulgaria has moved from the group of "modest innovators" to that of moderate. By the end of 2017, our country has reached an innovative performance of 48% of the EU average at 40% in 2014. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Economy Lachezar Borisov at an event related to the project "Support for growth and governance in the regions , whose development lags behind ". It is organized by the Ministry of Economy with the support of the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission.

For the 2014-2020 programming period, over € 1.4 billion is foreseen for the development of innovation under the Intelligent Specialization Innovation Strategy. for EU countries.

Bulgarian companies' capacity for innovation has improved since Bulgaria joined the EU, but small and medium-sized enterprises face a number of obstacles to become innovative, said Lachezar Borisov. In this regard, he pointed out that the main objective of the Ministry of Economy's policy is to create models for overcoming these obstacles by enabling more companies to become innovators and more actively involved in the development of new products and processes.

"There is an uneven development of the Bulgarian regions, with the Southwestern region, which is the capital Sofia, dominating, and the contribution of the Southwestern region to the national GDP (41.5%) is almost equal to the contribution of the other five regions," said Lachezar Borisov.

He added that the sustainable development of the innovative ecosystem in the country requires efforts and studies of new forms of ecosystems in each of our six regions.

The meeting presented the concept of multi-level governance of Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization by Ellis Gerousi, a representative of the Joint Research Center at the EC.
