On Wednesday, Siegfried Mureşan (EPP) and Carla Tavares (S&D) were appointed Parliament’s new rapporteurs for the post-2027 long-term EU budget.

Their first task will be to prepare Parliament's position ahead of the Commission's proposals for a post-2027 multiannual financial framework (MFF), due by the end of June 2025.

Commenting on their appointment, the two rapporteurs said:

"We are extremely grateful to colleagues for the trust they have placed in us. We will work hand-in-hand with our fellow MEPs to ensure that Parliament has a strong, united position and plays a full and active role in determining the size, shape and structure of the post-2027 long-term budget for the European Union. Without Parliament's approval, there can be no multiannual financial framework after 2027."

"There are big decisions and tough choices ahead for the EU in budgetary terms. We will make sure that our Union invests what is needed where it is needed to build a stronger European Union and to make a real difference to the lives of its people. We will also ensure that our budget is far better equipped to respond to crises and emerging needs."

"Starting today, we will be working hard together to ensure Parliament plays a full part in designing a revamped long-term budget for a Union in a changing world."

Background

Established for a period of at least five years, an MFF is there to ensure that the EU’s expenditure develops in an orderly manner and within the limits of its own resources. It sets out provisions with which the annual budget of the EU must comply. The MFF Regulation sets expenditure ceilings for broad categories of spending called headings. More information.
