MEP’s will next week participate in the UN Biodiversity Conference in Columbia that will assess progress in adequately restoring the world’s ecosystems and address major underlying issues.

An ad-hoc delegation from the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee in the European Parliament will participate in the global UN meeting on the Convention on Biological Diversity (the CBD COP16) that takes place 21 October - 1 November in Cali, Columbia.

The COP16 in Cali will be the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the historic landmark agreement for global biodiversity conservation, the so-called Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022 in Canada. COP16 will assess progress in implementation of this agreement and address major underlying issues.

The MEP delegation will be in Cali from 28 to 31 October. It consists of six MEPs, chaired by César Luena (S&D, ES). The other MEPs in the delegation are Sérgio Humberto (EPP, Portugal), Michele Picaro (ECR, Italy), Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy (Renew, Netherlands), Carola Rackete (The Left, Germany), Ruth Firmenich (NA, Germany).

MEPs will meet with delegates from non-EU countries as well as representatives of UN organisations and civil society, including indigenous people organisations, on issues such as biodiversity, land use change and nature restoration.
