MEPs and Court of Justice representatives discussed the first full year of the 2024 reform of the Statute of the Court of Justice on Monday, in Luxembourg.

Prior to the extraordinary meeting in Luxembourg, members of the Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) and representatives of the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) discussed the implementation of the 2024 reform of the Court’s Statute, which focused on enhancing transparency and facilitating an effective workload management at the Court of Justice.

In addition to a series of transparency measures, the Court made its proceedings more effective by transferring requests for preliminary rulings in certain areas to the General Court and by extending the filtering mechanism for appeals against General Court decisions.

The MEPs and Court representatives also exchanged views on other key topics of common interest, including judicial dialogue between the Court of Justice and national judges, and recent case law on privileges and immunities.

This was the third such discussion between members of the Legal Affairs Committee and CJEU representatives since formalisation of the constructive dialogue between the two institutions under the above-mentioned reform.

Legal Affairs Committee chair Ilhan Kyuchyuk (Renew, BG) said: “This working session between the Committee on Legal Affairs of the European Parliament and the Court of Justice of the European Union provided a timely opportunity to take stock of the first full year of implementation of the reform of the Court’s Statute. We had a productive, in-depth exchange on strengthening judicial dialogue with national courts beyond the preliminary ruling mechanism, reflecting on recent case law and examining the evolving jurisprudence on the immunities.”
