“My Voice My Choice”: statement by the chair of the Women’s Rights Committee
Today the European Commission presented a communication on the European citizens' initiative on ‘My Voice My Choice: For Safe and Accessible Abortion'.
Reacting to the Commission announcement on the European citizens' initiative, Lina Gálvez, chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, said:
“I welcome the announcements made today by Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu and Commissioner Hadja Lahbib on the follow-up to the European citizens’ initiative ‘My Voice, My Choice: For Safe and Accessible Abortion’, for which the European Parliament gave its support in a resolution adopted in December 2025. This is the first time that the European Commission has acknowledged that EU funds can be used to provide for safe abortion.
This morning, our committee adopted its opinion on the interim report on the proposal for the 2028-2034 multiannual financial framework. In it, the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality called on the Commission to consider without delay the budgetary implications of meeting the demands of the European citizens’ initiative, either by creating a dedicated budget line or by integrating it into an existing EU programme.
We also asked the Commission to include the My Voice My Choice initiative in the MFF for 2028 to 2034.”
