Highlights from the Budgets Committee's upcoming meeting

Budget MEPs will meet next Monday, from 15.15 to 18.00 in Brussels (SPAAK 5B001), and are expected to discuss the budgetary amendments tabled to the 2027 draft annual budget.

MEPs will vote on three Commission proposals to mobilise funding from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund for Displaced Workers (EGF) to support laid-off workers. One of the proposals concerns the mobilisation of €3.8 million to help 1,010 people who lost their jobs after the closure of the Cora hypermarket chain in Belgium. Hélder Sousa Silva (EPP, PT) is the rapporteur of the file. MEPs will also vote on a proposal to unlock €2.7 million from the EGF for 400 workers who lost their jobs in the automotive industry in the Spanish region of Galicia. The draft report was prepared by Sandra Gómez López (S&D, ES). A third draft report, prepared by Nicolae Ștefănuță (Greens/EFA, RO), will be voted on by MEPs on a proposal to mobilise €410,310 in EU funding from the EGF to support 233 workers displaced from Valmet Automotive, a Finnish company specialising in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers.

MEPs are also expected to discuss the draft report prepared by rapporteur Aura Salla (EPP, FI) on the Commission's proposal to mobilise €1.1 million from the EGF to support 351 displaced workers in the paper industry in Finland.

The Committee is set to debate a Comission proposal to unlock a total amount of €489.1 million from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to provide assistance to Malta, Italy, Portugal and Spain in relation to storms which took place in early 2026. Lucia Yar (Renew, SK) will present the draft report on the issue.

MEPs are set to discuss the budgetary amendments tabled to the 2027 annual draft budget. The Commission published its draft budget in June, and the Council adopted its position in early September. Parliament is working on its position under the rapporteurship of Nils Ušakovs (S&D, LV), and Michalis Hadjipantela (EPP, CY), and is expected to adopt it at the second plenary session in October. Parliament's work is divided into two streams: budgetary amendments to the draft budget, and an accompanying resolution. A total of 1,019 budgetary amendments have been tabled to the 2027 draft budget. The annual budget needs to be agreed between the Council and the Parliament by the end of this year.
