US midterms: statement by the chair of Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the US
The US midterm results are a clear signal against Trump’s agenda. Europe is ready to relaunch dialogue with the new Congress, says Brando Benifei.
Following the results of the US midterm elections, the chair of Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the US Brando Benifei (S&D, Italy) has issued a statement.
“The shift in control of Congress from Republicans to Democrats sends an unequivocal political message: the American people want to turn the page on Donald Trump’s agenda. From the rising cost of living to the war in Iran, from repressive policies on civil rights and citizenship to ICE operations, the message is clear: voters are calling for a change of course, and the new Congress must translate this into action. It is essential that Congress fully reassert its constitutional prerogatives, following years of repeated executive overreach, including in matters of international law.”
“As chair of the Delegation for Relations with the United States and co-chair of the Transatlantic Legislators’ Dialogue, I extend my best wishes to the newly elected members of the US House of Representatives and Senate. I hope this new legislature will mark a fresh start for dialogue and cooperation between our institutions. The transatlantic relationship remains indispensable to European security, the competitiveness of our economies, and the well-being of our citizens and businesses.”
“We must relaunch a positive and ambitious agenda: from progressively returning to zero-for-zero tariffs to strengthening support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression; from working towards a solution to the crisis in the Middle East to strategic cooperation on critical minerals and semiconductors. Europe and the US share an interest in strengthening their respective supply chains and tackling distortions in global trade and unfair competition. Now is the time to rebuild trust and invest in a partnership between allies, founded on reciprocity and shared strategic interests.”
